MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE ENT INFECTIONS (Tonsillitis, Sinusitis, Otitis Media, Pharyngitis, Laryngitis)

R/
1. Sudarshan-ghan Vati 500 mg – 1 gm thrice a day (Anti-infective)
2. Loswel Tablet 1 tab thrice a day (Anti-inflammatory)
3. Dolid Tablet 1 tablet SOS/thrice a day (Analgesic)
4. Madhuyashti tail – 3-4 drops to be instilled in b/l nostrils, thrice a day (Topical anti-inflammatory/antiallegic)

1. SUDARSHAN-GHAN VATI
The principal ingredient of Sudarshan-ghan Vati is Chirayata, an effective anti-infective drug. However, its effective therapeutic dose is 500 mg to 1 gm, thrice a day. You get this much ghan from 5-10 gm of Sudarshan Churna. B'coz most of the people dislike the bitter taste of Sudarshan Churna, it is better to use ghan.

2. LOSWEL Tablet
Contains Shallaki ext. 400 mg, Jatiphal ext. 200 mg, Erandmul ext. 200 mg. Shallaki is an established anti-inflammatory drug. Jatiphal is an analgesic (+anti-inflammatory) drug. Erandmul eliminates inflammatory edema (like serratiopeptidase). The three ingredients make LOSWEL Tablet an excellent anti-inflammatory formulation that has a significant role to play in lowering inflammation in acute ENT infections.

3. DOLID Tablet
Contains Jatiphal ext 400 mg, Godanti bhasma 400 mg, Vatsanabh shuddha 15 mg, Hingul shuddha 10 mg. Jatiphal is an excellent analgesic (+antiinflammatory), Godanti and Vatsanabh are analgesic and antipyretic drugs. Hingul is a yogavahi (bioavailability enhancer) that enhances the actions of the other 3 ingredients. If the pain is severe and is not fully controlled by LOSWEL Tablet, then use DOLID Tablet 1 tablet thrice a day, or SOS.

4. MADHUYASHTI Tail
Madhuyashti is an excellent antiinflammatory and anti-allergic. Madhuyashti siddha tail when used locally as nasal drops brings about fast improvement.

Glycogen Storage Disorder: An Ayurvedic anticipation

A developmental disorder of the children is the most commonly met clinical condition in the OPD and IPD of Vaidyaratnam P S Varier Ayurveda College, Kottakkal. One fine morning, an anxious couple dropped up into the Paediatric OPD, with their five year old child, named Farhan as he hitherto did not attain the ability to walk independently. The child also complained of abdominal distension, recurrent respiratory infections and recurrent diarrhoea. There was also observed a marked atonicity of the body muscles. The case was not a previously diagnosed one as it was his first approach for a medical reassurance. At the first glance, it seemed to be a yet another case of developmental disorder; as accounting for nearly 1/3rd of the in-patients in this institution. As the patient belonged to an unprivileged family, diagnostic investigations could not be advised for initially. So, a through preliminary clinical examination was conducted which revealed enlargement of the liver. At this moment, the suspicion was roused that whether an underlying metabolic cause predisposed this liver enlargement. So, it became inevitable to advise further investigations. Thus, Serum Lactatate and Serum Pyruvate were measured, however were found to be within normal physiological limits. The liver functions were analyzed which showed an elevated SGPT and Bilirubin concentrations, though it was not clinically perceivable. The Fasting Blood Sugar was noted to be very low than normal. These observations guided the diagnosis of the case to Glycogen Storage Disorder. Hunting for the causes of this clinical condition, it was learnt to be caused by either a genetic predisposition or may be a resultant of a toxic accumulation in the body. Analysing the condition with an Ayurvedic viewpoint, it was understood to be an outcome of accumulation of morbid metabolic toxins in the body. This was in turn precipitated by a diminished execution of the digestive and metabolic activities in the body- both at the level of GIT as well as at the tissue level. As the Ayurvedic principles in such clinical conditions lay down, the treatment was aimed to be ensuring a proper mobilization of the accumulated morbid metabolic toxins (AAMA VISHA FORM)at the tissue levels and to enhance the digestive and metabolic ability of the involved organs of the GIT. Simultaneously, with the clearing off of the accumulated toxins the rejuvenation of the individual cells of the body was held as a concern of equal importance. Following these principles, the patient was subjected to gentle DHANYAMLA POTALEE SWEDA. Internally, Vilwadi Tablet, Sudarsana Tablet, Indukantham Decoction and Dadimasthaka Powder were prescribed. Along with, Piper longum powder, known for its rejuvenating capability (in metabolic disorders of liver and spleen) was also advised internally. Gradually, to our utmost contentment, the diarrhoea and abdominal distension was found to be markedly relieved and the child appeared to be much cheerful. Meanwhile, Liver Biopsy was performed which confirmed the diagnosis previously made. The Renal functions were monitored, however, were within normal ranges. Subsequently, the FBS was also improved significantly.By the 45th day of the treatment, the patient who was carried down to the OPD some days back by his parents started walking by him.
PRINCIPLES
• AAMA PAACHANA(ushna management)
• VISHAHARA(Seeta Management )
• RASAYANAS UP TO THE LEVEL OF MAAMSADHATU
NOTE- WHILE TREATING ANY CASE OF DEVELOPEMENTAL DISORDER TRY TO EVALUATE THE METABOLIC STATUS

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AYURVEDA

#1: Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medicine system and one of the most holistic ones.

Ayurveda originates in India around 5000 years ago and translates to "Science of Life". What sets it apart from the modern Western Medicine is its holistic method which takes into account all features of mind and bodythat are important for the human health; physically and mentally as well as spiritually while dealing with the subtle relations between body, mind and its surroundings. By the way Ayurveda is as closely related to Yoga as the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is to Kung Fu.

---------------------------------------
#2: Ayurveda treats people as individuals

Instead of indifferently prescribing the same drugs to anyone Ayurvedatakes care of people individually according to their constitution and personality. To help determine this constitution the model of "Doshas" or "Tridosha System" is used: everyone of us is dominated by a unique combination of Doshas - the 3 vital energies or rather one energy with 3 different sides - and these Doshas affect every person differnetly and cause different vulnerabilities and resistances. Considering these helps treating people gently and naturally by making use of their own self-healing capabilities.

---------------------------------------
#3: Ayurveda is about maintaining health and preventing illness.

We all know prevention is better than curing, right? The major objective of Ayurveda is to prevent illness and preserve health by way of living. It is about looking after yourself and your body so to not exhaust your personal resources through the rush and stress that are all too common in modern societies. Not only will it help you to maintain your natural but since it's a holistic approach you'll also feel better and match up to all the day-to-day obstacles. So rather than trying to cure symptoms when it's too late Ayurveda aims to not even get to that point and will help you to find and cure the real cause of any illness through natural means.

---------------------------------------
#4: Even a little Ayurvedic knowledge (like knowing your Dosha) can help

Ayurveda is a big thing, a vast and age-old knowledge base that can seem very daunting to the novice. Most of the terms and explanations are in staggering Sanskrit and can make a first comprehension or overview quite difficult without any help. But that's just fine, you don't have to understand everything at once and there are nicely written books to help the Westerner along. If you can find an Ayurvedic practitioner or a Yoga class that also teaches about Ayurveda, even better. But if you only want to see what Ayurveda is and "test it" there's no harm in just including ayurvedic bits and pieces into your lifestyle wherever you feel comfortable doing so. Ayurveda is not a radical diet that demands absolute discipline, but suggests to do all the changes you want to make rather gradually and see if you can adjust to them and want to extend your knowledge. (That is as long as you're not suffering from any serious condition in which case you should really see an ayurvedic or general practitioner.)

---------------------------------------
#5: Ayurveda is not bound to religion

Although Ayurveda has its origin in India and is there closely connected to Hinduism you don't have to believe in any special gods or rituals for Ayurveda to work for you. It's a medicine system and even though it's holistic and is designed to care for your mental and spiritual health as well as your bodily health that doesn't mean you have to believe in anything. I feel spirituality has gotten kind of a suspicious name and many Westerners don't feel quite comfortable talking about it because it's often connected to peculiar or even dangerous sects. So to be clear: spirituality doesn't mean a certain religion. Religion can be a path to a person's personal spirituality but is in no way the only one. Spirituality means nothing more than knowing your deepest values and personal meaning of life and following them.

---------------------------------------
#6: Ayurveda is labeled as "The Mother Of Healing"

Although Ayurveda is not very well known in the Western world today, it has impacted all major healing systems in the world. And it is becoming ever more accepted because it speaks of those keystone ideas of contact with nature, holism and that we are what we eat.
Ayurveda forms an essential part of the lifestyle of millions of people worldwide and its methods are applied not only to treat personal problems, but also to develop a balanced cuisine and create healthy and harmonious environments. The final intention of Ayurveda is to help the individual discover a personal knowledge of living.

---------------------------------------
#7: Ayurveda is about physical as well as mental health

Almost all ailments arise from a combination of multiple circumstances instead of having only one clear cause. Many "modern" common Western ailments like headache, migraine are triggered largely by mental causes like persistent stress and fatigue in the most basic of cases. Frequently this is promoted by a lifestyle characterized by haste, fast food and social pressure. In the eye of society the value of personal freedom and free time has subsided favoring instead the qualities of being hardworking and resilient, ignoring the pressure this is putting on the individual because it's not considered as "real" by the public until it gets physical. An ayurvedic lifestyle helps putting this back into order and valuing your own mental health.

---------------------------------------
#8: According to Ayurveda a healthy diet is the main resource for good health

Ayurveda is about preventing illness and its most important method is a healthy diet. This is not a strict diet but rather about guidelines for well balanced and individually positive cooking - what is perfectly good for one individual may be less healthy for the other and so it's vital to know your unique constitution and Doshas. According to Ayurveda the majority of health problems can be traced back to lacking eating habits which eventually diminishes the body's resistance and comes into picture as the one or the other symptom. Only should dietary alterations not succeed to enhance a condition comes the supportive system of herbs, treatments and medicine (in the Ayurvedic sense of the word).

---------------------------------------
#9: Ayurveda looks at everything as either poison

Ayurveda considers literally everything natural utilizable as medicine instead of wholly depending on fabricated solutions from the pharmaceutical industry. If anything acts as medicine or toxin will depend according to Ayurveda in fact only on the quantities taken.

---------------------------------------
#10: Ayurveda is NOT some new age idea
... but an actual science that has been improved over millennia and is a valid alternative (or supplement) to the western medicine. Being a holistic approach it incorporates parts that might seem to be connected to new age, but as a wholeAyurveda is still a science and nothing less

{Asterics (*) represent daily Adequate Intake(AI) .. }

Components....

Offering your child healthy foods from all of the food groups creates balanced nutrition..WHO
recommends four milk product servings, two to three protein servings, four or more grain servings and four or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily for kids aged three to six. Choose whole grains and lean proteins when possible for the best overall health value.

Environment...

A positive environment toward healthy eating encourages your child to take the same approach. Family meal time gives everyone a chance to communicate. Your child may also eat more healthy foods, specifically grains, vegetables and fruit. Your child may also be less likely to choose unhealthy snacks. The family meal gives you a chance to model healthy eating habits...

Child Involvement.....

Getting the child involved in the meal planning and preparation gives her hands-on experience with proper nutrition. She learns what goes into a healthy meal during the planning phase. Your child also learns how to prepare healthy foods when you allow her to help with the cooking. Picky eaters may be more likely to try a new food if they helped create it.

Considerations.....

A house full of healthy, nutritious foods makes it easier for your child to develop proper nutrition habits. Provide your child with lots of healthy snack and meal options. Kids Health recommends giving your child some choice from a selection of healthy options. This empowers him while limiting his options to nutritious foods. Avoid power struggles over eating healthy foods, which may cause your child to resist even more.

Fat Considerations....

Young children need fat in their diet for proper development. Bright Futures recommends not limiting fat consumption before the age of 2. They also recommend serving whole milk until age 2 as a source of healthy fat for development. You should gradually reduce the amount of high-fat foods after age 2. At age 5, you should limit a child's fat consumption to 30 percent of his daily calories.

Iron Intake....

Iron deficiencies resulting in anemia are common in young children. Watch your child's diet to ensure she gets enough iron. Bright Futures recommends waiting until after 12 months to start a child on cow's milk, which does not offer iron like fortified formula. Limit the consumption of cow's milk to 16 oz. per day and feed her foods with a lot of iron. Meats and fish offer iron, while foods with vitamin C help the body absorb the iron better.

Schedule Meals and Snacks...

A regular schedule for eating meals and snacks gets your child into a routine. A schedule also ensures your child gets enough nutrients through frequent eating. A schedule also helps you balance the nutrients you offer to your child. He may not always eat well at each meal or snack time, but he will get the nutrients he needs throughout the day with frequent meals.

Offer Healthy Food Choices....

Kids need a variety of nutrients in the early childhood years. Keep a variety of healthy foods available in the home and offer your child these nutritious foods at meal and snack time. Continue offering healthy foods to your young child, even if she refuses them initially. It may take more than 15 tries before your child will actually eat a new food item, according to Bright Futures. However, if you keep healthy foods available for your child, she will eat them eventually.

Schedule Meals and Snacks....

Food For The growing Years...

Food For The growing Years...

During the first few years of life,it is vital to meet a child's nutritional needs in order to ensure proper growth and to establish a lifelong of healthy eating.Eating a meal should be both healthy and enjoyable.Between the ages 2 to 20 the human body changes continuously.Muscles grow stronger, weight can increase. The most striking changes take place during puberty, which occurs between the ages of 10 to 15 in girls and slightly later-between the ages of 12 -19 in boys.

Children need energy for all the growing years.Almost 1,300 calories per day for a 2 year old.1,700 calories for a 5 year old,2,200 calories for a 16 year old girl, and 2,800 calories for a 16 year old boy..The amount of food that a child requires varies according to height, build, gender and activity level.

As children are growing and developing...bones, teeth, muscles etc, they need more nutritious food that is proportionate to their weight. Food consumed by children should contain proper level of calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin B,C and Vitamin A. It should mainly consist of:

  • Low fat
  • Non-fat milk
  • Decreased intake of whole milk and egg
  • Increased snacking.
Nutrient Needs

1....Energy

The energy needs of a child are determined on the basis of basal metabolism, rate of growth, and activity. Dietary energy must be sufficient to ensure growth and spare protein from being used for energy, without being excessive that it results in obesity. Energy intakes of healthy, growing children of the same age and sex vary depending mainly on their activity level.

2....Protein

The need for protein per kilogram of body weight decreases from approximately 1.2 g in early childhood to 1g in childhood. Children who are most likely to be at risk for inadequate protein intake are those who have multiple food allergies or those who have limited food selections because of fad diets, behavioral problems or limited access to food.

3....Minerals and Vitamins

Children between the age group of 1 and 3 are at high risk of iron deficiency (anemia) . The rapid growth period of infancy is marked by an increase in both hemoglobin and total iron mass. In addition, the child's diet may not be rich in iron-containing foods. For this age group, calcium is needed for adequate mineralization and maintenance of growing bone.

Actual needs depend on individual absorption rates and dietary factors, such as quantities of protein, vitamin D, and phosphorus. Calcium retention in children between 2 and 8 years of age totals approximately 100 mg /day. Children need two to four times calcium per kilogram more than adults. As milk and other dairy products are primary sources of calcium, children who consume none or limited amounts of these foods are at risk of calcium deficiency.

4..Fats....

Consumption of too much dietary fat leads to excessive calorie consumption and weight gain..So as per the recommendations total fat intake should not exceed 30% of calories and saturated fat should account for no more than 10% of total calories. In addition, cholesterol intake should not exceed 300 mg per day.

The value of Dietary fats.....

Fats are probably the most misunderstood nutrients.Although everyone should avoid excess fat,we all need a certain amount for important body functions.Several vitamins (A,D,E and K) can be absorbed only in the presence of fat,and fats are necessary for the production of other body chemicals, including the hormones that transform boys boys and girls into men and women.

5..Fiber.....

With the growing age..the fiber intake should be increased..Children should consume Fiber..Their age +5 grams of fiber...

Vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption and for deposition of calcium in the bones. This nutrient can also be made available from the action of sunlight on subcutaneous tissues.

Zinc is essential for growth. Deficiency results in growth failure, poor appetite, decreased taste acuity and poor wound healing. The best sources of zinc are meat and seafood.

Iron Deficiency....

Iron is an essential mineral for normal growth and development for a child. There are 2 types of iron...
a)..Heme:..Easily absorbed by humans..
b)..Non heme iron:..Which is poorly absorbed.

Foods that contain heme iron include meat,eggs,fish,poultry,seafood..While the breakfast cereals, legumes(beans),grains, seeds, nuts, dried fruits, and dark green leafy vegetables contain the non heme iron.Children should have a variety of iron containing foods in their diet.In addition, the consumption of Vitamin C rich foods improves the absorption of dietary iron...

Building Bone:...

Calcium.... is important for forming strong.healthy bones during adolescence and preventing osteoporosis later in life.Youths 10 to 16 years old need 3 to 4 milk product servings a day-the equivalent of 2 cups of milk and 2 slices of cheese or 3-4 cups of yogurt/curd every day.

Snacking And Fast Food:

Teenagers often prefer snacks loaded with fat, sugar, and salt:Potato Chips,French fries.pizzas etc. These are high in sodium and strike a poor balance between calories and nutrition.Encourage children to choose food with high in Vitamins, iron, calcium.

It is important for parents who are concerned that their children eat too few vegetables or too many junk foods to take a look at their own eating habits and reevaluate the example they are setting for their kids.

Balance And Variety...

Children need a wide variety of foods..Carbohydrates-breads,cereals,fruits,vegetables-must make up the major part of the diet..protein foods can include meat, fish, milk, soy products and combination of grains and legumes(beans).Milk is an important source of calories, minerals and vitamins.Children 4 to 9 years old should have 2 to 3 milk product servings every day.

A growing Epidemic...Obesity....

There is a big problem of becoming children over weight or obese..The consequences of obesity:high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, sleeping disorders and orthopedic complications. There is an increased  risk of  heart attacks in teenagers..Overweight children tend to become overweight adults. So now parents must foster positive elements such as healthy eating..by encouraging kids to consume more fruits, vegetables, whole grains ..to avoid foods high in saturated fats for children over 2,encouraging kids to consume more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains...At least 60 minutes of physical activity every day..

Over weight children tend to become overweight adults.Parents must foster positive elements, such as healthy eating, positive body image, active lifestyle early in a child's life. The best approach to control weight in obese youngsters is serving smaller portions and encouraging regular vigorous exercise....

In the next doc file we will see the necessary food elements for the children.....The good and bad food habits...

Which Oil is beneficial for Health?

Which Oil is beneficial for Health?
Now a day there are so many discussions about OIL. We always wonder which oil is good to eat and healthy?
Ayurveda described so many oils and there benefits in ancient texts. Almost all herbs and its fruits, seeds, leafs are contain certain oils and medicinal qualities. Oils used in paintings colors, medicines, and in various cosmetics like soap, shampoos etc. While many people believe that oil, as well as other types of fat, are unhealthy, there are actually many health benefits of oil.
The general qualities of oil is nicely described in Charak Sanhita as below-
Mostly oil is slightly sweet and pungent in taste, hot in nature, pitta prakopak, easily absorbed via skin, strengthen muscles, energetic, good for skin, increase mind power as well as digestive fire. If oil is used along with herbs den surely its surly removes the diseases from body.
Which oil is GOOD and which is BAD to eat?
When we are going to administer oil with food, we should take some precaution while having it. Like, how much saturated and unsaturated fat is available in it? What will be combine effects of oil n food? Etc etc…
Mostly this oil we used-->

1)      Olive oil –
It is high in monounsaturated fats. These fats lower the risk of heart disease in several ways. They reduce total levels of cholesterol as well as the bad, LDL levels. Olive oil can also raise the levels of HDL, or good, cholesterol in the blood.
Consuming 2 tablespoons of olive oil each day can reduce your risk of developing heart disease. In addition to the heart healthy benefits of olive oil it has other benefits as well.

2)      Coconut oil
Not so good for eating purposes.
Coconut oil is made up mainly of saturated fat, which concerns many people.
Coconut oil is easily utilized as energy. It contains fewer calories than many oils, and the calories are efficiently converted by the body to increase endurance and energy levels. In addition, the fat in coconut oil does not show the propensity to accumulate around the heart and inside the arteries as other types of saturated fats.
It may also help prevent arthrosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Coconut oil also has antioxidant properties, which help to reduce signs of aging and age related diseases.
3)      Canola oil
It contain omega -6 fatty acid which is essential amino acid for body. Uses of this oil decrease swelling, decrease cholesterol level, and control hypertension. It can be used in almost all types of food.

4)      Peanut oil
Peanut oil is most commonly used when frying foods, particularly French fries and chicken. When we talk nutritious value of it, peanut oil is not so good oil.

5)      Sesame oil
Ayurveda described this oil as best oil. It contains almost all kind of vitamin and minerals.
Good for heart diseases also. Control high BP, relax mind and sooths skin nicely. It can be used for the stir frying of meats or vegetables, or for the making of an omelet. East Asian cuisines often use roasted sesame oil for seasoning.
It is suggested that regular topical application and/or consumption of sesame oil should mitigate effects of anxiety, nerve and bone disorders, poor circulation, lowered immunity and bowel problems. It is suggested such use would also relieve lethargy, fatigue, and insomnia, while promoting strength and vitality, enhancing blood circulation. There are claims that its use has relaxing properties which eases pain and muscle spasm, such as sciatica, dysmenorrhoea, colic, backache, and joint pain.

6)      Sunflower oil
Sunflower oil is high in the essential vitamin E and low in saturated fat.
It may also help food stay fresher and healthier for longer periods of time. One can consume it at daily bases.

7)      Fish oil
