DESCRIPTION
A large deciduous tree, upto 30 m high; bark grey, longitudinally fissured, aromatic. Leaves 14-40 cm long, imparipinnate, young leaves tomentose; leaflets 5-9, the terminal largest, elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, entire.

DISTRIBUTION
This species is globally distributed from South East Europe to Himalaya, China and Russia, naturalised in United States. Within India, it has been recorded in Temperate Himalayas between an altitude of 3000-10000 feet, Lahaul-Spiti (Jalma-Thirot), Meghalaya (Khasia Hills) and Tamil Nadu (Palni: Kodaikanal, 2100 metres) in both cultivated and wild state.

CULTIVATION 
Though walnut grows in unreclaimed and poor soils, it prefers well drained silt loam soil for best growth with an annual rainfall of 75 cm or more.The trees are generally raised from seedlings.
