Ayurvedic branches

Ayurvedic Studies and specialization are characterized by The School of Surgeons (Dhanvantari) and School of Physicians (Atreya). Ayurvedic Studies are categorized into eight branches as below:
Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine) – Kaya (Body) is referred to as not just the gross body, but also the subtle body, according to Ayurvedic texts. Kayachikitsa recognizes that human body is a product of psychosomatic interactions, and that diseases are caused due to imbalances of the doshas (Vata, pitta and kapha), or sometimes by the dhatu (body tissues), mala (Toxin deposits) and sometimes by the mind. Hence this branch of alternative medicine, delves deep into finding out the root cause of illness, and then recommending a suitable treatment for balancing the mind and body. Kayachikitsa always provides an opportunity to stop disease at every stage, without its full manifestation. Panchakarma, is one of the significant treatments of Kayachikitsa.
Shalya Tantra (Surgery) – In contrast to modern concepts, surgery was practiced byAyurveda in ancient India, and Shalya Tantra is a significant branch of Ayurveda. Ancient Sage-physician Susruta, in his text, Susruta Samhita, mentions sophisticated surgical methods that were practiced in India. It deals with surgical methods adopted for dealing with tumors, bone fractures, external and internal injuries, pregnancy complications and obstruction in intestinal loop. The instruments adopted included those in wood, stone and other natural materials.  Shalya Tantra was well-accepted due to the quick relief, rather than the slow recovery through herbal medicines. Even the best known ancient Ayurvedic physician, Charaka, recommended Shalya Tantra for treating certain diseases such as hemorrhoids.
Shalakya Tantra (Ophtamology, ENT) – This branch of Ayurveda deals with prognosis, diagnosis, prevention, etiology and treatment of ear, nose, throat, eye and head. This branch is so named, due to the excessive use of ‘shalaka’ which refers to a probe or a rod. This branch discusses about seventy two diseases pertaining to the eye. He also refers to various drug therapies such as glaucoma, conjunctivitis, ear diseases, nose, throat, pterygium, auroplasty and rhinoplasty. It also has simple home remedies for minor problems pertaining to mouth ulcers, migraine, eye drynessetc.
Agada Tantra (Toxicology) – Agada Tantra refers to various methods of removing toxins from the body, as well as antidotes for poisons. This branch deals with a various natural toxins resulting from wild lives such as insects, animals or birds, herbs, plants, vegetables, artificial poisons, minerals, and water and air pollution. Agada Tantra describes the disadvantages of bad food habits and drugs that lead to chronic poisoning symptoms.  This branch also provides information regarding the accurate dosages of poisons after which they are considered fatal.
Kaumarabhritya (Paediatrics) – This branch provides a comprehensive knowledge about prenatal and postnatal care, and gynecology. Kaumarabhritya takes into consideration the physical and mental state of the mother, which has direct association with the child. It recommends a particular regimen of diet, nutrition and conduct forpregnant woman, and is so advanced that even years ago, the growth and progress of the foetus is described in detail. Apart from dealing with infertility problems, its causes and treatment, this also mentions about the method to deal with various disorders ofchild health, such as teething disorder, rickets or gastrointestinal diseases.
Vajikarana (Science of Aphrodisiac) – This branch of Ayurvedic studies, describes the art of producing a healthy offspring, for betterment of society. Therefore, this branch deals with issues such as infertility, conditions relating to shukra dhathu or crucial reproductive fluids of the body. This branch prescribes effective formulations to provide nutrition, and enhance the quality of body fluids, and emphasizes in leading a disciplined life. This branch of Ayurveda, highlights that celibacy is necessary for good health, as it increases memory, intellect and will power, in addition to maintaining a healthy body. As Shukra datu, is directly associated with body immunity, Vajikarana, prescribes the use of aphrodisiacs and tonics for enhancing reproductive capabilities.
Bhuta Vidya (Psychiatry) – This branch specifically deals with diseases of mind, which is caused by super natural forces. Different explanations are provided for the word “Bhuta”. While some refer to it as ghosts or bad spirits that cause abnormal psychological condition, others say it represents bacteria or viruses. It is also believed that the past karma, is the cause of such diseases, and hence Ayurveda does not have a direct explanation in terms of Tridosha. Bhuta Vidya explains that in most cases, illness is caused by mental disturbance when tarnas (ignorance) and rajas (passion) are the main factors. It refers to use of disinfectant plants ‘graha vidya dravva’ for fumigation, to keep the atmosphere germ free. It also recommends pranayama and meditation to soothe psychological disturbances.
Rasayana (Science of Rejuvenation) – This particular branch of Ayurveda, concentrates on “rasayana therapy”, which helps in increasing the immunity of a person and in enhancing ojas (life force) through regeneration of body cells and tissues. Rasayana is considered a therapeutic process to defer old age. Rasayana refers to augmentation of rasa (the crucial fluid produced during food digestion). Ayurveda considers rasa, as the body fluid which sustains life, and hence considers Rasayana as a method of treatment through which rasa is balanced in the body.
Another suggestion of rasa in Ayurveda is that it is the herbal medicine which retains the health and life of an individual, increasing his body and mental vigor. Hence rasayanas made from herbs and medicinal plants such as haritaki, amalaki etc are used since ancient days in giving disease free, long life to individuals. Another aim of this branch of Ayurvedic studies is to balance tridoshas. Hence this branch mentions thepreparations of herbal oils, meditative practices, Pranayama and meditation to attain mind and body healing.

Sthaulya

The chief cause of obesity or overweight is often overeating, irregular eating habits and not following the rules of eating such as improper mixing of food items in one meal.

In ayurveda, Charak Samhita describes eight different types of bodies that are disease prone. Out of these, the obese body is described as the one afflicted with the most diseases and troubles. Obesity is the condition or physical state of the body when excessive deposition of fat takes place in the adipose tissue.

Extra fat puts a strain on the heart, kidneys, liver and the joints such as the hips, knees and ankles and thus, overweight people are susceptible to several diseases like coronary thrombosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, gout, liver and gall bladder disorders.

To decrease weight and get rid of obesity three things must be kept in mind:

    Preparation of Home Remedies

According to ayurveda home remedies are prepared in the same way and with the same purpose as other ayurvedic medicines. The main aim is to obtain the maximum therapeutic benefit while making it palatable. Some common methods of preparing home remedies are:
    • Juice
The juice may be taken from the fresh leaves, flowers or stems of the herb. The part of the herb used should be crushed or ground in a mortar and pestle, to make a paste. This paste should be put in a piece of cloth and squeezed to take out the juice.
Dosage: One to two tablespoons twice a day.

    • Powder
Dried herbs are used for powders. The herbs are usually dried in a cool, shady and well-ventilated place, although some herbs are dried in direct sunlight. The herbs are then ground into a fine powder and stored in a dry, airtight bottle. The powder may be taken with water, or if specified, with milk or honey.
Dosage: Half to one teaspoon twice a day

    • Decoction
A decoction is prepared by boiling the herb in water (ratio: 1 part herb to 16 parts water). The herbs are broken into pieces and soaked in water overnight. This mixture is then boiled until it reduces to one quarter of the original volume. It is then filtered and stored in a glass bottle.
Dosage: One to two tablespoons twice a day.

    • Infusion
Herbs are soaked in water to make an infusion (ratio: 1 part herb to 8 parts water). Hot infusions result from adding herbs to hot water, or gently heating but not boiling the mixture. This is strained and taken internally. Herbal teas are forms of hot infusions. Cold infusions are made from soaking the herb overnight. Honey can be added.
Dosage: half to one cup once or twice day.

    • Paste
A paste can be made from either fresh or dried herbs. The flowers, roots, stems, leaves or bark are ground and mixed with water. Pastes are mainly used for external application, in cases of cuts, burns and swellings. The paste should be thick enough to be applied in a layer to the skin.

    • Tablets
The herbs should be first dried separately and then mixed together in a powder form, in fixed proportions. Water or herbal juice can be added to this powder to make a paste, from which tablets of a specific size or weight are made. Tablets remain potent longer than juices, powders, pastes or decoctions.
Dosage: 1 or 2 tablets twice a day.

    • Medicated ghee and oil
Ghee is cooked with herbal juices, decoctions or pastes. The ghee should be heated with the herbal mixture at a moderate, controlled temperature. High temperatures can easily burn the ghee or oil, destroying its effectiveness. Medicated ghee and oils are either used internally or massaged externally.

      Dosage: Half to one tablespoon.

Acne

Are you tired of a huge pink dot on the end of your nose. You detest the glimpse of whiteheads sprouting under your bottom lip. You don't like this at all and want toget rid of acne. So lets understand the causes of acne.

Acne may be the scourge of the adolscent years, but it can follow some people into middle age and beyond.” Women can have flare-ups at 25 or 35 years old and even older.

Acne is really a catchall term for a variety of symptoms such as pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. “It's a condition where the pores of the skin become clogged and the person gets inflamed and non inflamed lesions.”

So what's the cause of all the clogging?

“Chocolate doesn't cause acne.” “Dirty hair or skin doesn't cause it. Sex, either too much of it or a lack of it, doesn't cause it either.”

So what does? Heredity- at least for the most part.
“Acne is genetic; it tends to run in families. It is an inherited defect of your pores.”

If both of your parent had acne, three out of four of your brothers and sisters will get it, too. But if your sister is pimple-free while your face is a war zone, be aware that other factors can aggravate an acne outbreak.

“Stress, sun exposure, seasonal changes, and climate can precipitate an acne attack.” Certain types of makeup and taking birth control pills can also cause a breakout.

“Working women are especially vulnerable as they are prone to lots of stress, plus they tend to wear makeup a lot.”
So here's some natural remedies, keeping in mind those who need to get rid of acne, the most.

Change your Makeup
Makeup is the major factor in acne outbreaks. “Oil-based makeup is the problem.” The oil is usually a derivative of fatty acids that are more potent than your own fatty acids. Use a non-oil-based makeup if you are prone to acne.

Read the Labels
Cosmetic products that contain lanolins, iso-propyl myristate, sodium lauryl sulfate, laureth-4, and D & C red dyes should also be avoided as these ingredients are too rich for the skin.

Rinse your Face
“Wash your makeup off thoroughly every night.” “Use a mild soap twice a day and make sure you rinse the soap entirely off your face. Rinsing six or seven times with fresh rose water should do it.”

Stay out of the Sun.
Acne medications may cause adverse reactions to the sun. Minimize exposure to sunlight, infrared heat lamps, and sunscreens.

Scrub that skin.
Cleanse your skin thoroughly every time with some good herbal scrubbers followed by a good toner. These days there are lot of herbal and organic range available, but if you have time then you can try some natural tips like the oatmeal which cleanses pores by absorbing oil and exfoliates the skin. Honey eases application and serves as a skin toner.
Know more about benefits of honey
Soothe your skin.
After cleansing use a good astringent & a toner to soothe your skin. Lemon juice is a natural astringent and mild antibacterial agent. Rose petals, from which rose water is made, also have antibacterial properties. It is a also a skin toner and helps to mitigate the rather harsh, acidic quality of straight lemon juice.
Use natural home remedies acne treatment packs.
  1. Make a thicker paste out of baking soda and water. Apply to face for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Follow up with a light moisturizer.
  2. Make orange peel paste by grinding it in some water. Apply on and around pimples.
  3. Rub garlic on and around pimples.
  4. Apply fresh mint juice over the face every night.
  5. Pulverize 1/3 cup uncooked oats and then add ¼ cup of water. When it becomes the consistency of paste, add approximately 1/4 cup honey and mix thoroughly and allow to cool then apply on the pimples for 10-20 minutes. Do not leave it on too long or it will become difficult to remove. You can also try oatmeal, yogurt and sour cream with a few drops of lemon juice. These ingredients are mixed together and applied on affected areas for 15 minutes and then rinsed with water.
  6. Apply fresh lime juice mixed to a glass of boiled milk as a face wash
  7. Lemon juice and rose water acne treatment. Mix equal parts lemon juice and rose water. Apply directly to skin. You might feel an initial sting from the lemon juice. Rinse after 15-30 minutes. Be careful of exposing your skin to direct sunlight if you have been using lemon juice on your face. Also, though a strong reaction is unlikely, do not continue this treatment if it irritates your skin.
  8. For acne scars, “Tomato is known to remove acne scars”. You can easily get tomatoes from your kitchen and slice it. Apply the tomato slices to your scars. Regular application of tomato slices on your scars can visibly give you excellent results. Another technique frequently used to get rid of acne scars is rubbing ice cubes against the pimples to reduce inflammation and slowly erase the scars.
Try herbs to cure your acne naturally.

Aloevera for Acne
There are hundreds of varieties of aloe that grow all over the world. Most have medicinal properties. However, it is aloe barbadensis that is known as aloe vera, the species with the most value as a natural remedy. Transparent gel from the pulp of the meaty leaves of Aloe vera has been used topically for thousands of years to treat wounds, skin infections, burns, etc. Use aloe vera juice on the pimples daily morning and night or as long as necessary (perhaps five months or longer). It is also a natural antibiotic

Mint for Acne
M. balsamea (peppermint) Peppermint is preferable to spearmint as a medicinal herb because it contains menthol which is a natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory.
  • • Take a handful of mint (pudina) leaves and crush them thoroughly with a mortar and pestle.
  • • Rub the leaves and juice on affected skin and leave for 5-10 minutes.
  • • Rinse with cold water.
  • • Repeat as often as desired to alleviate pain and inflammation.

Note: Do not continue this acne treatment if it irritates your skin.

Natural Breast Enlargement

Herbal breast enlargement is gaining popularity as many problems and pains are associated with breast augmentation that is also called augumentation mammaplasty. If you are a female with small breast and all the time feeling embarrassed and shy then do not worry further. First because small or large breast is just the body form and there is nothing wrong from the biological point of view till you do not have any other problem associated with the size. Secondly if you still want to have large breast size then an old age ayurveda has the solution for small breast. In this breast enlargement is done with the intake of certain herbs rather than painful surgery.

Breasts consist of fat globules and fibrous tissues with no muscular tissues. Pectoral muscles keep them firmly held between the rib cage. If your muscles are in good shape then you will have good cleavage and lift.

In herbal breast enlargement massage, taking herbal medicines and pills or having the herbal extract is done. Many herbs like fenugreek, fennel seed, dandelion root, watercress and kelp can be taken to increase the breast size. These herbs causes the growth of tissue that results in the more fuller breasts. The effect of herbs vary from women to women but for sure natural breast enlargement is far better than the breast augumentation. Along with breast enlargement these herbs also make PMS and menopause easy.

Causes for Small Breast

If you have small breast then there is nothing wrong in this. It is just the pressure from the society and your inner self that forces you to go for the breast enlargement. Prakruti

Doshas are the 3 energies that govern the body; Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

At conception, we were created with a unique blend of the 5 great elements (ether, air, fire, water, earth).
That unique blend is called our Prakruti or Individual Body Constitution.
Our Prakruti is a combination of the Three Doshas vata (ether + air), pitta (fire + water), and kapha (water + earth). Since Prakruti is made of the 3 Doshas, knowing what your Dosha(s) is, is key to maintaining your health.

Once we know what Doshas are dominant in us, we know what our balanced state should be. This is extremely important because with this knowledge we are able to notice when the body goes out of balance AND we know how to bring it back to balance. Since we are little beings of nature and are made of the same 5 elements, we can use the opposite elements to bring us back to balance.

As per Ayurved, like increases like, therefore too much “like” will cause aggravations that could lead to disease.

For example, if you are a Pitta person (who naturally has more heat) and you are eating spicy foods in the hot summer, your Pitta Dosha will increase and could create heartburn or maybe a skin rash (heating diseases). To balance it, you would use the opposite qualities by eat cooling foods and cooling drinks.

Another example would be a Vata person eating salads in the fall/winter. The cold and dry qualities increase of the salad increase the cold and dry qualities of Vata, thus increasing Vata Dosha which causes disorders like anxiety, dry skin, constipation, etc., To keep Vata balanced, keeping warm and moist in fall/winter is their best bet.

An example of excess Kapha would be eating curd or yogurt in the spring. Kapha is sticky, wet and heavy, So when the weather is sticky, wet and heavy, and the curd or yogurt has the same qualities, you get increased Kapha Dosha. It creates imbalances like chest congestion (mucus), allergies, lethargy. To cut through Kapha and get it moving, have warm and spicy liquids.

So basically disease is caused by the body going out of  harmony span with it’s natural state, when we know what that natural state is, we have the ability to keep ourselves free of disease. Take the test to find out your dosha, whether you are Vata, Pitta, Kapha or any combination of the three. Once you know, you can make decisions accordingly to keep your body, mind, and soul totally balanced and healthy.

Spirituality and Stress Relief

In India, psychological problems\ diseases are comparatively less. Spirituality or even blind faith in spirituality sometimes may be the reason behind it. If you know the history, you will admit that the spiritual philosophy of Lord Buddha is also an outcome of stress, what he felt in the earlier days of his life.

Taking the path less traveled by exploring your spirituality can lead to a clearer life purpose, better personal relationships and enhanced stress management skills.

Some stress relief tools are very tangible: exercising more, eating healthy foods and talking with friends.
A less tangible —  but no less useful — way to find stress relief is through spirituality.

What is spirituality?
Spirituality has many definitions, but at its core spirituality helps to give our lives context. It's not necessarily connected to a specific belief system or even religious worship. Instead, it arises from your connection with yourself and with others, the development of your personal value system, and your search for meaning in life.
For many, spirituality takes the form of religious observance, prayer, meditation or a belief in a higher power. For others, it can be found in nature, music, art or a secular community. Spirituality is different for everyone.

How can spirituality help with stress relief?
Spirituality has many benefits for stress relief and overall mental health. It can help you:
  • Feel a sense of purpose. Cultivating your spirituality may help uncover what's most meaningful in your life. By clarifying what's most important, you can focus less on the unimportant things and eliminate stress.
  • Connect to the world. The more you feel you have a purpose in the world, the less solitary you feel — even when you're alone. This can lead to a valuable inner peace during difficult times.
  • Release control. When you feel part of a greater whole, you realize that you aren't responsible for everything that happens in life. You can share the burden of tough times as well as the joys of life's blessings with those around you.
  • Expand your support network. Whether you find spirituality in a church, mosque or synagogue, in your family, or in walks with a friend through nature, this sharing of spiritual expression can help build relationships.
  • Lead a healthier life. People who consider themselves spiritual appear to be better able to cope with stress and heal from illness or addiction faster.
Discovering your spirituality
Uncovering your spirituality may take some self-discovery. Here are some questions to ask yourself to discover what experiences and values define you:
  • What are your important relationships?
  • What do you most value in your life?
  • What people give you a sense of community?
  • What inspires you and gives you hope?
  • What brings you joy?
  • What are your proudest achievements?
The answers to such questions help you identify the most important people and experiences in your life. With this information, you can focus your search for spirituality on the relationships and activities in life that have helped define you as a person and those that continue to inspire your personal growth.

Cultivating your spirituality
Spirituality also involves getting in touch with your inner self. A key component is self-reflection. Try these tips:
  • Try prayer, meditation and relaxation techniques to help focus your thoughts and find peace of mind.
  • Keep a journal to help you express your feelings and record your progress.
  • Seek out a trusted adviser or friend who can help you discover what's important to you in life. Others may have insights that you haven't yet discovered.
  • Read inspirational stories or essays to help you evaluate different philosophies of life.
  • Talk to others whose spiritual lives you admire. Ask questions to learn how they found their way to a fulfilling spiritual life.
Nurturing your relationships
Spirituality is also nurtured by your relationships with others. Realizing this, it's essential to foster relationships with the people who are important to you. This can lead to a deepened sense of your place in life and in the greater good.
  • Make relationships with friends and family a priority. Give more than you receive.
  • See the good in people and in yourself. Accept others are they are, without judgment.
  • Contribute to your community by volunteering.
Pursuing a spiritual life
Staying connected to your inner spirit and the lives of those around you can enhance your quality of life, both mentally and physically. Your personal concept of spirituality may change with your age and life experiences, but it always forms the basis of your well-being, helps you cope with stressors large and small, and affirms your purpose in life.

Wish you a Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body.
